Tumblr is described as “a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users are able to “follow” other users and see their posts together on their dashboard. Tumblr, which is free for users, with plans to expand the audience and fine-tune the blogging platform. Tumblr lets me do a sort of stream of consciousness thing that I find totally simple.
I’ve been getting addicted to Tumblr. Tumblr helps you make that personal connection with your audience. Tumblr has drawn in features but offers a more social blog as well as unique tumblr themes. Tumblr has prided itself on being one of the most simple and easy ways to blog, and these new features only enhance that, and they should be proud – IT ROCKS. Tumblr reminds an older site Pownce, which was my favourite years ago. Unlike Pownce, Tumblr has no tool to promote the links.
Tumblr is currently a free service, but its something I would have paid for it in a heartbeat if they offered a way for me to give them cash. If tomorrow they offered a premium plan, would I pay for it knowing the support track record? Tumblr is the easiest way to express yourself online. The form of expression on Tumblr is called a tumblelog, which (as defined by Wikipedia ) is “a variation of a blog that favors short-form, mixed-media posts.” .Tumblelogging exists to express a more ethereal identity. Amazon Niche Store
Amazon has a great affiliate program and makes it easy to take advantage of their API to create your own Amazon Niche Stores. Up until now there has not been a truly easy way to create an Amazon Niche Store. I recently had the opportunity to test out a new WordPress Plugin that allows you to create a Niche Amazon store that is really a true store. So far the only options available that we found are CRAP!!! This new WordPress Plugin allows you to have a full blown Amazon Niche Store literally within minutes. I suggest using a WordPress Hosting company to get your WordPress site setup, and then second just simply enable the plugin. The next few steps are just configuring the plugin to have your information and the products you want the store to have. But best of all the plugin is free!
The Amazon Niche Store WordPress Plugin will be available to the public and for free to everyone.
Amazon Associates Program
Amazon’s Associate Program is perhaps one of the most popular ones for bloggers because it is pretty simple to use and has such a wide range of products in their system ranging from books, to electronics, to jewelry, to CDs and DVDs etc. It’s also great because there are many tools that can be used to integrate it into your blog including WordPress Plug ins. Some bloggers even integrate Amazon stores into their blogs (something I need to get set up).
Another beauty of the Amazon program is the variety of ways that they give you to link to their products. Even using just their basic tools on the Associates page you have the option to link to products using text links, pictures, buttons and a variety of keyword triggered techniques.
I personally use Amazon’s program quite a bit on some of my blogs and find it quite effective. While my earnings from Amazon are far less than my Adsense income it’s a nice bonus each quarter (they pay every three months). This quarter (just over half way) my total is just over $900 (USD).
Amazon’s affiliate program pays out in either gift vouchers (to be spent in the store), cheque (check) or direct deposit (if you’re in the US).
Amazon Associates Program Pros:
- massive array of products to choose from
- reliable payment system
- options for different payment types
- reasonably easy to use
- variety of linking tools
- Amazon are fairly well regarded and trusted by consumers
Amazon Associates Program Cons:
- only quarterly payments (many other programs are monthly)
- commissions can be lower than some other programs (although they have an incentive/bonus program that increases the % when you sell certain targets)
- incentive program can be a little complicated to understand
- some of their buttons and link methods are a little dated
- not great on some products internationally (ie while Amazon will send books and some products internationally some of the bigger ticket items will not be sent overseas. So if you have a non US readership you might have to also sign up for other Amazon affiliate programs (ie they also have a UK, Canadian, Japanese one etc this can get a little messy)).
I’ll share more tips to help maximise Amazon earnings later in this series – but in the mean time I’m sure others have a variety of experiences with Amazon and can shed some light on it as a program for us. Share your thoughts on the Amazon Affiliate program in comments below.
Tumblr is the new Twitter
Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you have heard of and or used Twitter. Twitter has become known for its ability get short messegaes to your followers quickly. Twitter has also been a huge Gold Mine for marketeers allowing us to monitor all the trends that are happening and what people are thinking while it is happening. But Twitter has also been known to attract a lot of Spammers, so Twitter has made some efforts to stop this and to attack the Spammers unfortunately they havnt done a very good job. So now we have a new contender who is shaking things up and will most likely take over Twitters market-share. The new company is called: Tumblr
Tumblr has solved many of the problems that Twitter wasn’t able to, and unlike Twitter, Tumblr is not known for temporary outages. Tumblr also allows you to customize Everything! Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, phone, desktop, email, or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors, to your theme’s HTML.
Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users are able to “follow” other users and see their posts together on their dashboard. Users can like or reblog other blogs on the site. The service emphasizes customizability and ease of use.
Tumblr’s emphasis is on customizability and ease of use, with a relatively simple sign-up process. The “like” button, which lets one user tell another that they like his or her content, and the “reblog” button, which easily reposts content from one tumblelog onto another, provide positive feedback that has given Tumblr an 85% retention rate, compared with 40% for Twitter.
Users “follow” other tumblelogs, much like on Twitter, and their updates appear in one stream on the Dashboard. This is the interface where users can like and reblog posts, as well as the buttons to add content to their own tumblelog. Other tumblelogs the user maintains appear on the right, along with statistics like tumblarity.
There are many forms of content that can be added to the user’s own tumblelog: there is the “Text” post, which is a simple self-explanatory form of post, which may be composed using a Text Editor, or HTML, depending on the user’s preference (A basic knowledge of HTML is helpful when using the site in more advanced ways). As of mid-2009, it has been possible to upload images from your computer into a “Text” post, which was not the case originally; there is the “Photo” post, where the user can upload from their own computer an image (many file formats are applicable), or can embed from another site using the URL of that image. In a left-to-right fashion on the interface, the next category of post is “Quote” where one inserts a body of text into a box, and then submits a source – together these appear on the dashboard in a suitable manner. Next, the “Link” post, where one enters a body of text into one field, and a URL in a separate field (and an optional caption), and the body of text appears on its own as a hyperlink – a convenient way of avoiding the need for HTML anchors. Following this, there is a “Chat” post which automatically inserts the code required to copy conversations from Instant Messaging programs etc. into a similar style. Next, we have the “Audio” post, where one can upload MP3s (up to 10MB in size), or host audio files from other sites. However, the user may only upload one audio file per day. After this, there is the “Video” post, where the user can embed video files from sites such as YouTube and any site that hosts files (e.g. Photobucket), or upload to Tumblr by logging into Vimeo – who are working together with Tumblr to provide this free service.
Tumblr is a site that offers a more expressive blogging service. Instead of the usual, long worded text posts and similar templates, you can structure your blog in any way you want. The main focus is the creativity that allows you to choose how you may want to convey everything, from background to picture alignment. This will allow people to write rapid fire posts and throw it on their Tumblr blogs. As well, people may notice that successful Tumblr blogs are always unique in their own way- whether the site style is retro, or the text has an insane font and colour.
Created in 2006 in New York, Tumblr has been getting a steady flow of increasing users every day since August 2008, as well as more visitors. Although slightly less than half of users are American, Tumblr is used throughout the entire world. However, compared to other blog sites, Tumblr has a slightly slower growth rate.
The main difference with Tumblr is that freedom of blog styling is enormous. You can set-up the blog in any way you see fit, and customize to your preference. Also, the ease of changing is very simple, and only takes a few clicks of the mouse. Speed, however, is the main point of difference. Some blogs can take you a while to pst, but on Tumblr it’s extremely more convenient and fast to do it, due to the fact that most blogs don’t even post that much text, it’s whatever they feel like posting.
Tumblr has a very simple Web 2.0 feel and look, feeling black and white at times though. The graphics are very simplistic in nature, but to the point. The navigation is smooth, unobtrusive, and clean, as well as the general interface of everything on the site.
It is very friendly to register on Tumblr. The only thing you are forced to do is input your e-mail address, password, and name of the Tumblr blog you require. With no verification code or e-mail check, it’s very smooth and fast- almost basic even. Registration can be considered one of the fastest out of all blog sites, so be sure to note that.
Tumblr is completely free as of August 2008. There are absolutely no ads, (which are subject to change) which are quite pleasing. However, in the future Tumblr may decide to include priced advanced options to help with costs, but they pledge to keep mostly everything free.
This site is extremely recommended for those who don’t have time to start a proper blog, or have no idea what they’re doing and want to give it a shot. The key point is that it takes less time to devote a blog on Tumblr than another blog service. Newcomers and experts alike at blogging will be pleased to try Tumblr and its reliable services.
- Ability to create your own unique blog
- Simplistic menu when adding new items to your blog
- Advanced menu to customize blog, own domain name, etc.
- Option to create a group where you can share control
- Choose to follow interesting blogs on Tumblr to be notified of updates
Google Maps To Add “Google Store Views”
Feb 4, 2010 at 12:22pm ET by Barry Schwartz
I received a tip from a New York retailer named Oh Nuts, that Google came to their store to take pictures for a new Google Maps product named “Google Store Views.” I was told that they took pictures of the inside of the store, every 6 feet, in all directions. They also took pictures of products.
Google Store Views will allow people to essentially walk into the store, off of Google Street Views. So imagine you are looking at this store, and then you can click on the door to enter it, all on Google Maps. Then when you enter the store, you can wall through it.
Here are pictures of Google capturing the pictures from within the store:
Here is an embed of the Google Maps Street View of outside of the store:
I have emailed Google for a statement on this tip and I will update this post, if and when I get one.
Postscript: A Google spokesperson sent us the following statement:
We are always experimenting with new features for Google Maps. We have nothing further to announce at this time.
Is Google working on an addition to Google Maps that will take users inside stores? According to a tip received by Search Engine Land, that’s exactly the case, with their source labeling the project “Google Store Views.”
Oh Nuts — a New York nut and candy retailer — e-mailed the blog outlet claiming that someone from Google “came to their store to take pictures for a new Google Maps product,” and that “they took pictures of the inside of the store, every 6 feet, in all directions. They also took pictures of products.”
Oh Nuts accompanied this bit of intel with the photo seen below, which shows a nondescript man with camera equipment photographing the store (as seen by the store’s security cameras).
At the moment we have no way to confirm if the addition of in-store images to Google Street View is a legitimate product in the works (obviously those photos could be staged). We e-mailed Google for comment, and an official representative gave us the same statement that was communicated to Search Engine Land: “We are always experimenting with new features for Google Maps. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”
The non-confirmation is not a denial, which definitely piques our curiosity. Should the intel be legit, we think it would be an interesting experiment and evolution of the current Google Maps Street View functionality.
One thing that does add up is the fact that Google Street View has its origins in New York City (the city was one of five populated with images at launch), which means any additional enhancements to the offering would likely begin in New York as well.
In some ways, being able to virtually browse through a store without having to physically walk in could be a big timesaver, but in other ways it could be conceived as more intrusive than necessary.
While we wait to see what comes of this rumored new product, we’d like to leave you with the following video as a parting thought. Remember, Google Street View is watching.

Visuals are an important part of advertising, so it’s not surprising that so many companies have jumped on the augmented reality bandwagon, offering tools that visualize their products in a magical and memorable way.
Here we take a look at some pretty amazing promotional uses of this new tech that work with common webcams, giving everyone a chance to experience augmented reality — a trend that will be big in 2010.
1. BMW Z4
This BMW interpretation ties in with a TV ad that sees artist Robin Rhode using the Z4 as a giant paintbrush (think big-scale finger-painting with the car’s tyres). Downloading the software, printing out the 3D symbol and holding it up to your webcam will allow you to see your own miniature Z4 on your screen, which you can then drive around using keyboard commands, creating your own Rhode-esque car painting.
2. TOPPS 3D LIVE Trading Cards
Taking the trading card into the 21st century, the Topps “3D LIVE” range offers baseball (and now also football) stars that leap from the special cards onto your desk, as viewed via webcam. As well as creating miniature holographic representations of the players — a neat enough trick that would impress most kids — the concept is taken a step further with the angle that you can control the player’s signature moves via your keyboard.
3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
As well as augmented reality, this example uses clever face-tracking technology to stick the original 3D CGI head of Optimus Prime atop your own visage. The campaign to promote “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” also includes a hidden holographic message from Bumblebee, again developed using the original 3D model of the robot that appeared in the movie, suggesting CGI films may be ripe for more AR apps in the future.
4. Doritos Sweet Chilli Chips
What we like about Doritos’ take on the tech for the Brazilian market is that the webcam code is printed on the back of the chip packet, adding value to something normally disposable. Perhaps this also means less chip bags littering the streets. Holding up the code on the Sweet Chilli chips packets initiates the appearance of a little cartoon character, which can then be used in an extended online game.
5. USPS Priority Mail Virtual Box Simulator
Erring on the functional side of promotion, the USPS Priority Mail Virtual Box Simulator is a wickedly clever use of the tech that lets users compare the size of an item they need sent to the size of boxes available from the postal service, by seeing how well their item fits inside a transparent box. Although not particularly high octane excitement, it does illustrate the practical use of AR which is yet to be fully explored.
6. Star Trek
These kind of applications work particularly well with a techie audience, or in this instance a Trekkie one. The front cover of certain versions of the Star Trek movie on DVD and Blu ()-ray doubles as a webcam code to initiate the “cadet orientation” program. It offers a holographic tour around the USS Enterprise (that appears as a hovering apparition on your screen), incorporating a look at the bridge, and best of all, a trigger to fire the ship’s weapons, complete with sound effects.
7. Wrigley’s 5 Gum
Created for the launch of Wrigley’s “5″ chewing gum in France (although the site is also available in English) this interactive example of AR sees five symbols (each representing one of the five gum flavors) becoming a different track that only plays when the webcam can “see” it. The desktop DJ experience is probably best explained by watching the demo video above, populated appropriately by masticating teens.
8. Ray-Ban
Although many items of apparel can be bought online, sunglasses are one of those tricky products that you really need to try on to ensure you look more chic than geek. Ray-Ban’s Virtual Mirror (ably demonstrated here by YouTuber NickHearne) lets you virtually try on glasses (after a quick bit of face-mapping). The software lets you move your head around to see how the shades look from different angles. Depending on the opacity of the glass, you can even see your eyes through some of the shades. Seeing this app in action makes us think this could be where the real commercial future of AR lies.
9. Lost Valentinos
John Mayer, Eminem and Julian Perretta are three other musicians that have dabbled with AR as a way of making their music videos more compelling, but this effort from the Lost Valentinos — with each printable code representing a member of the band to be arranged as you see fit — is a great example of how to keep it tight. In addition, the band’s site doubles as a video gallery for fans to share how they interacted with the AR by uploaded webcam video clips.
10. Always Infinity
This time round we’ve saved the worst for last. How best to promote feminine hygiene products? With an augmented reality white bunny of course. We think the world can do without this irrelevant foray into the AR arena that assumes a female audience will be blown away by an incredibly basic application of the tech.

SEO Smart Links Plugin for WordPress
SEO Smart Links provides automatic SEO benefits for your site in addition to custom keyword lists, nofollow and much more. WordPress Plugin SEO Links Plugin
SEO Smart Links looks for keyword phrases that match the titles of your posts and pages by default (and you can enable categories and tags matching too). These phrases are then turned into the links. The matching is case insensitive and the original case is preserved. So If I mention Amazing Grace, which is my theme and also the title of one of my pages, it will be automatically converted into a link. Everything happens completely transparent, and you can edit the options from the administration settings panel.
SEO Smart Links allows you to interlink the content on your WordPress site automatically. For example if I mention my wordpress theme Amazing Grace, it will be automatically linked to the matching page on my blog. You can edit the option what you want to be parsed for possible links (posts, pages and comments) and what should the plugin target with keywords (posts, pages, categories and tags). Category Search allows you to add category names to your search results. For example if you have 200 categories and you wanted them to appear in search results, you couldn’t. Now you are able to include those categories as well.
Why use No-Follow Links
- As long as search engines are concerned, on most blogs category pages will carry irrelevant information since category names are likely to be too general to rank for (like my categories WordPress, SEO etc.)
- Category pages are source of duplicate content
- No-follow links allow you to direct the flow of your link equity to the pages or websites that you want to share link value with.
In-site linking is extremely important as it tells search engines what pages have the highest level of importance to you. Its for this very reason that tags are very important for any blog.
